Preventative & Curative Fungicide Treatments

Picture of a lawn disease making the lawn brown and dead Lawn diseases are one of the most devastating problems for homeowners in our area. They lead to brown and unsightly grass despite proper fertilization treatments. Turf grass is most susceptible to disease when stressed by environmental factors we routinely face in NJ and PA. These include drought, high heat and excess moisture (rain or high humidity). While some diseases are simply cosmetic, most can cause significant damage if left untreated. Early detection is vital.

Fairway Green, Inc. takes great pride in our technician’s ability to leave accurate and timely recommendations regarding lawn disease control to help our customers’ properties thrive despite this common turf issue.

Lawn Disease Programs
  • Preventative Fungicide Program: This program consists of up to 5 monthly treatments offering the best control for most diseases. In NJ and PA, common lawn diseases that are well controlled with a preventative fungicide program include Brown Patch, Red Thread, Dollar Spot and Summer Patch.
  • Curative Fungicide Applications: Several common lawn diseases can also be treated after they infect the turf. A timely fungicide application as soon as symptoms appear can render the disease inactive for a few weeks. This gives the homeowner time to promote new growth through proper irrigation. It is important to point out that curative fungicide applications are not a “cure” but instead render the disease inactive for a set period of time. If unfavorable conditions persist, another fungicide application may be needed. These individual treatments take place after the disease is present, so prompt disease diagnosis and treatment is imperative.

Common Lawn Diseases

 Red Thread

Red Thread, while unsightly, is a very common and usually harmless fungus prevalent in the spring. The first observable symptoms of red thread lawn disease are tan-to-red “threads” often seen in small patches.  While this disease is most frequently cosmetic, it can cause frustrating discoloration in your yard.

Brown Patch

Brown patch disease can significantly impact turf in NJ and PA if left untreated. Brown patch disease is active in the summer months when the weather becomes humid with nighttime temperatures above 55 degrees. This disease can severely blight large portions of turfgrass within an 8-hour period when conditions are favorable.

Dollar Spot

Dollar Spot is one of the most frequently seen diseases in the summer months, this disease’s most notable trait is its appearance. The disease presents as burned or bleached circles in the lawn that resemble silver dollars. While this disease starts off cosmetic, it can cause permanent damage to the grass if left untreated.

Summer Patch

Unlike foliar diseases, summer patch attacks the root system, not the grass tissue. The signs and symptoms present themselves between July and September. Infection, however, happens earlier in the spring. Due to these traits, early detection of summer patch is very difficult. After infection, small patches of turf form and turn a brown/orange color with green colored turf in the center. Fungicides can be applied if it’s detected early enough, otherwise preventative treatments may be recommended the following season.
